APERTURE
"...what we really found intriguing is just how this really challenged the notion of what a room in the city is, of what a space is..."
A temporary timber pavilion, Aperture offers a contrast to the bustling environment of the 16th Street Mall by creating an inviting space for people to relax. The structure’s form twists upward to frame a view of the sky above accented with dynamic patterns of light and shadow.
The pavilion utilizes simple repetitive elements combined to create a more complex form. The walls are open panels assembled from standard lumber cut to length, bridging the gap from stick to panel construction. The choice of beetle-kill pine allowed us to utilize a less desirable, otherwise waste material while also embracing the natural patterning inherent in the material
Rather than resign this urban experiment to the landfill, we wanted to ensure that the materials can re-enter the circular economy once it’s time is up. Unfinished, organic, and recyclable materials were used throughout. The pavilion was designed using all mechanical connections so to be fully demountable, allowing for re-purposing or recycling of all individual components.
