We are an architect and an artist.
We collaborate.
Sort Studio is a collaborative art and architecture firm that creates innovative and engaging spaces with a research-led approach that seeks new solutions to challenging problems at all scales.
It started as a design project - how could we form a studio that draws on our diverse backgrounds and interests where we could collaborate, experiment, and design together.
We work across a variety of scales, from an urban room to a steel lattice soaring overhead. Our public work includes a bridge over Boulder Creek inspired by the dynamic movement of the water below; Aperture, a micro-park on the 16th Street Mall designed to focus your gaze to the ever-changing sky; Point to Point, a three dimensional drawing of glowing thread; and the Denver Art Museum's Family Central, reconfigurable play spaces as open as children's imaginations. Our Residential projects are tuned to their environments, from Forest House, a retreat for ex-city dwellers, to Shoshone House, an oasis of calm in the center of the city.
We are proud to have worked with diverse partners ranging from the City of Boulder to the Downtown Denver Partnership, the Denver Art Museum, and the Toledo Museum of Art.
Brian Dale explores the human relationship with the natural and built environment through work that challenges conceived boundaries between art and architecture. His interest in designing systems rather than objects is influential in his parametric approach to design.
Prior to founding Sort Studio, Brian was an Associate with Zaha Hadid Architects in London. Over eight years he was involved in over 30 projects, leading design teams for the Sleuk Rith Institute in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and KAPSARC in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Brian holds a Masters of Architecture and Urbanism from the Architectural Association’s Design Research Lab and a Bachelors of Environmental Design with Special Honors from the University of Colorado. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects and a registered Architect in the State of Colorado.
Meredith Dale studies the ambiguity of line and shape, shadow and light. She is fascinated with daydreaming and a hyper-personalized reality that lies within abstract shapes and forms, particularly those found within natural phenomena such as movement of clouds and shadow. Painting and drawing form the material basis for her field studies.
Meredith’s expertise in materiality, form and texture was honed through her training as an applied artist at Middlesex University in London and her understanding of context informed by her Master’s degree in History of Contemporary Design from Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London.
